Kids on the Farm

kid1

We have recently added a small addition to our farm. Our goats had babies, but unfortunately the mother rejected one of her new kids. We have named our new little kid Legacy.  She is completely brown except for a completely white back leg.  Legacy has been adopted by our friend, Georgia. Georgia brings Legacy to the farm to socialize with the other goats but otherwise Legacy is living a healthy life in Georgia’s house for now.  Legacy is bottle-fed milk every three hours and is growing at a healthy rate.

It is not uncommon for female goats to reject their young.  This may be because the kid does not smell like their own after birth; the mother knows there is something wrong with the kid; or knows she does not have enough milk to support the number of kids she just had.  Whatever the reason here, we are lucky Georgia is stepping up where momma goat would not.

What’s in the bag this week?

For the week of August 17, 2014, you should receive the following in your share:

  • Broccoli
  • Beets
  • Bok choy
  • Cucumbers
  • Cabbage
  • Kohlrabi

Did you know: Sometimes broccoli can hide some bugs that we don’t see until it’s too late.  To make sure eating broccoli is enjoyable, be sure to soak in warm salt water for about 20 minutes.  This will release the bugs from the broccoli.
